This chapter reviews the guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the Surgical Infection Society (SIS). Note: Empiric antibiotics should be tailored based on local pathogen prevalence and susceptibility patterns, pathogen-specific risk factors, and prior pathogen and antibiotic exposure. Once final culture and susceptibility results are available, empiric therapy should be optimized accordingly.
