Abstract: The basic variables and laws of mechanics of a particle are presented. The linear momentum and angular momentum of a particle are defined. Newton’s three laws of mechanics are presented with an emphasis on the notion of an inertial frame. Examples using the various coordinate systems are given. Then, the principle of work and kinetic energy is formulated using the notions of power, work, and kinetic energy. Finally, we consider conservative forces, potential energy, and the balance of total mechanical energy.
