Autism Disclosure for Girls and Women: Perspectives from Parents and Autistic Individuals
摘要
This chapter explores the complex issue of autism diagnosis disclosure, focusing specifically on girls and women on the autism spectrum. It combines insights from two key sources: a focus group with parents of autistic girls, and interviews with autistic women reflecting on their own diagnosis disclosure experiences. The parental perspective reveals the unique dilemmas and considerations faced when deciding whether and how to disclose an autism diagnosis to their daughters. Complementing this, the firsthand accounts from autistic women provide valuable retrospective insights and recommendations for parents navigating this process. By juxtaposing these viewpoints, the chapter offers a comprehensive examination of the disclosure journey, highlighting potential gaps between parental concerns and the expressed needs of autistic girls.
