Waste and rejects, even from sectors apparently far from the building industry, can represent a strategic opportunity for the development not only of new products, but also of new ‘circular’ supply chains and industrial symbiosis processes. In order to activate an economy that is not only ‘circular’ but also ‘sustainable’, it is necessary to assess the actual sustainability of the choices made in a life-cycle perspective on a case-by-case basis. The application of the LCA methodology is one of the main tools to assess the benefits that can be obtained from the recovery of various types of waste, planning processes to develop sustainable solutions and strategies to support the circular economy. This contribution returns the first results of a research developed in collaboration with Laterlite S.p.A. Paying attention to sustainability aspects, the study envisages the recovery of selected aggregates from furnace production waste or from controlled demolition and coming from locations not far from the Melilli (SR) plant. The methodological procedure applied in the development of the project and the results of the first mix design and characterisation phases are reported here. The results obtained will be used as a reference for the appropriate corrections required to guarantee product performance.
