Designing a New Collaborative Educational Platform on Glass Design and Engineering: A Case Study

The widespread adoption of glass as construction material, driven by significant advancements in its manufacturing techniques, has changed the design of modern buildings in the 20th and 21st Century. Currently, the development of high-performance glazing systems – such as highly Insulated Glazing Units (IGUs), selective coatings, adaptive devices, etc. – has allowed the design of new fully glazed buildings capable of integrating natural light, architectural aesthetics, and energy performance. Nevertheless, the development of these new types of buildings and technologies has not always been followed by a proper advancement of specialistic training networks and tools for professionals and students. It follows that, currently, glass design and engineering is a wide and complex topic developed unevenly across different cultural and economic areas. The aim of this paper is to describe a case study regarding the development of a new open-source collaborative content platform on glass design and engineering. This project allows to create and collect high-quality Open Educational Resources (OERs), revised and validated by experts in the field, in an open access platform providing a useful tool for both students and practitioners. The platform addresses the core and emerging topics in research, innovation and application of glass in the building field through five main collections: fundamental, applications, codes and standards, sustainability, projects and research. This paper describes the structure adopted for the platform, the review process, and the current status of the project in order to provide a first overview of this new tool.
