Frederiksberg as Place and Public Sphere
摘要
This chapter offers an ethnographic portrait of Frederiksberg, a wealthy, conservative enclave within Copenhagen, and examines how its local democracy and public sphere function in the platform era. Through lived observation, it reveals a city marked by contrasts: visible affluence alongside overlooked social divides. The chapter traces the decline of Frederiksberg Bladet, the once-dominant local newspaper, now reduced to soft, non-political coverage, creating a “topical gap” between citizens’ concerns and journalistic priorities. Into this vacuum, Facebook has become the main arena for civic communication, where politicians, residents, and groups negotiate local issues and identity. Despite the loss of robust local journalism, Frederiksberg’s digital public sphere shows notable levels of civility, engagement, and accessibility, though tensions beneath the surface hint at democratic fragility.
