Noise Control at the Narrow Tube Outlet by a Dipole Resonator

It is known that dipole acoustic resonators are the more efficient reflectors of sound waves at the narrow tube outlet compared with the monopole resonators, for example, the Helmholtz resonators. Results of the experimental study of noise control by a dipole resonator depending on its size and position relative to the tube outlet are presented. It is shown that the dipole added mass is an important factor determining the noise reduction efficiency. Expressions are presented for calculating the sound field radiated from a pipe into the free space, which also has the dipole radiation pattern.
