Vertical Greenery Systems for Building Stocks: Application of Type Solutions and Evaluation Models

The topic of resilience to climate change has long been addressed on a global scale with repercussions at the local level. The UN Agenda 2030, Goal 11 (2023) and the European Green Deal (2019) identify Nature Based Solutions (NBS) as strategies for the climate resilience of cities. Among the NBSs, Green Infrastructures (GI) are of particular interest, which, when applied to building stock, are articulated in Living Wall (LW) and Green Facade (GF). A review of the state of the art has shown that research concerns the performance of greenery assessed both with simulation models and on investigations of test rooms; moreover, even the applications of vertical greenery, examined through recent realisations, only concern new construction in the European and international landscape. Therefore, in view of the multiple benefits of greenery on a building and urban scale and with the aim of comparing it with existing buildings, the research focused on the built heritage of the second half of the 20th century in the area of social housing and on possible greening interventions. The paper addresses the topic of vertical greening of the existing building stock in a Mediterranean climate; it intends to investigate the compatibility of ‘technological green’ with the building stock, hypothesising its application to a case study. Finally, we propose a multi-criteria model to support the design of interventions for the integration of VGS on the existing buildings.
