I have proposed the concept of transpersonal gratitude with the aim of developing a unified understanding of genuine dyadic gratitude. The choice of the adjective “transpersonal” represents a move away from the term “–dyadic”—which is merely a comment on the two-component nature of the experience while being somewhat vague—and instead reflects the phenomenological focus of the concept. It also aims to distinguish this account from propositional gratitude, which remains close to cases of gladness even with the added requirement that the beneficial circumstances must have personal relevance (Rush, 2020) since it stops short of accounting for the experiential aspects of gratitude in the absence of a benefactor. For the same reasons, transpersonal gratitude is better expressed as gratitude for, rather than gratitude that. The phenomenological aspect must be considered to gain a comprehensive understanding of instances of gratitude that arise in the absence of a benevolent agent and to develop a fitting theoretical framework.

摘要
