Design and Validation of a Digital Mindset Model: A Combination of Organizational Culture Theory and Design Science

Digital transformation (DT) is a crucial challenge for modern organizations that requires cultural and structural adjustments. A digital mindset, which includes digital competencies, personal characteristics, entrepreneurial orientation, personality traits, and motivation, is a key factor for a successful transformation. This study develops and evaluates a comprehensive digital mindset model, filling research gaps that often focus on individual characteristics. Using the design science research approach and a mixed-methods design, Schein’s organizational culture theory is integrated to examine how artifacts, values, and assumptions influence digital readiness. The model includes six dimensions: Digital mindset, digital competencies, personal competencies, personality traits, motivation, and entrepreneurial orientation. A five-level maturity framework, from “Digital Outsider” to “Digital Master,” enables companies to assess their digital readiness. The results highlight agility, communication, and technological competencies, while negative interactions, such as conflicts between results orientation and error acceptance, are addressed. Expert reviews confirmed the completeness and practicality of the model and suggested refinements for traits such as ‘extraversion’ and ‘generosity’. Recommendations include industry-specific applications, particularly in traditional sectors, and the need for broader samples to improve generalizability. By operationalizing the digital mindset with measurable dimensions and maturity levels, this research provides a robust framework to support sustainable Digital transformation.
