Bridging Academia and Industry: A Case Study Applying Digital Microcredentials in Biotechnology Education
摘要
The Biotech Skill Up Program addresses challenges for post-graduate entry into the biotechnology workforce by aligning curriculum with industry workforce demands. The program equips learners with validated biotechnology skills through digital microcredentials mapped to nationally recognized biotechnology standards, Austin Community College Biotechnology certificates, on-campus research laboratory standards, and local biotechnology industry needs. This digital microcredential framework enables learners, educators, and employers to communicate skill requirements via earned digital microcredentials and for learners to progress effectively toward proficiency. A sub-set of learners who completed biotechnology training and earned validated digital microcredentials were able to receive summer internships at local biotechnology companies, core facilities on campus, or faculty research laboratories. In addition to earning competitive internship positions, pilot results show significant gains in learner confidence across key lab-based skills, validated through pre- and post-surveys.
