This chapter explores Douce’s networks and their crucial role in the formation, development and use of his collections. Douce’s family connections, friendships and social acquaintances are mapped, and an overall view of his professional, scholarly and academic relationships is provided. Douce’s networks brought together scholars, collectors, artists, authors, explorers, antiquarians and scientists working on disparate materials and subjects, both in Britain and abroad. Through them, and from his library in central London, Douce gained access to images from all over the world and to the ideas about them discussed within academic circles in Britain and in Continental Europe. The study of Douce’s networks considers how knowledge was created and circulated, and how such knowledge was closely intertwined with objects and their images.
