Preliminary Assessment
摘要
Conducting the initial assessment for providing trauma-informed, culturally based intervention (TICBI) involves understanding the survivor’s history, their trauma responses (mindsets), and identifying trauma-related symptoms. Acquiring the necessary skills for delivering culturally informed practices is vital to ensure the effectiveness of TICBI and to prevent re-traumatization. Having trauma intervention skills allows for the delivery of tailored interventions based on cultural understanding, trauma responses, and service needs. TICBI begins with an in-depth assessment that explores the pressing issues faced by the client, followed by an intervention. The initial assessment sessions enable the social worker to engage the client in a culturally informed and respectful conversation that leads to setting goals for the desired change. Exploring the biological, psychological, social, structural, and cultural aspects of trauma helps the social worker and the survivor identify the predisposed, perpetuating, and protective factors that contribute to the development and maintenance of the current problem the survivor faces. An in-depth assessment within the TICBI process provides social workers and survivors with a realistic understanding of the impact of the client’s past traumas, current triggers, and stressors as they collaboratively plan for change. This chapter outlines steps social workers can take in the process to enhance clients’ self-awareness and implement necessary changes to promote well-being.
