The situation of the military conflict in Ukraine highlights the importance of implementing measures to ensure the safety of centralized drinking water supply. One of the main threats to be considered is the potential use of chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear weapons to contaminate water sources. In addition, there is a real danger of destruction of infrastructure of water supply and sewerage enterprises. Such actions lead to a significant impediment to provision of adequate water supply and wastewater disposal services, which poses a substantial risk to public health. In this regard, it is crucial that water utilities have effective systems for prompt and appropriate response to possible chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear contamination of water. The article proposes the sequence of development of a Response Plan for potential water pollution emergencies in the main water source of a water utility and identifies algorithms for eliminating the consequences of such an incident. The importance of prompt and clear setting of objectives for eliminating the consequences of the incident is emphasized; then a strategy and tactical operations are developed to implement the set objectives. The article proposes the main technological methods for purification of drinking water from certain types of contamination as tactical operations to eliminate the consequences of the incident. It is noted that the objectives of eliminating the consequences of a water pollution incident may change significantly in the course of implementing the Response Plan, and the strategies and tactical operations for their implementation will change accordingly.
