Cultivating Systems Change: A STEM Microcredential Model to Seed Transformation

This chapter presents a STEM microcredential model that positions science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) microcredentials as strategic seeds of systems change. The model is supported by adaptable scaffolding from established change frameworks (Concerns-Based Adoption Model, Fullan, Rogers, Ely) and human-centered methodologies (Design Thinking). When thoughtfully planted and cultivated through this approach, STEM microcredentials promote inclusive social mobility, enable transparent talent validation, and foster ecosystem trust, all without requiring immediate disruption to traditional infrastructures. Drawing from active implementation experiences including banking sector co-design partnerships, IBM (IBM SkillsBuild, n.d.) SkillsBuild initiatives, and the development of the Verified Learning Exchange, this model demonstrates how STEM microcredentials can scaffold transitions in learning and labor systems while serving as evidence that transformation is taking place.
