Quality of the Indoor Environment in Sports Facilities for Children and Youth

This study investigates the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) of sports facilities for children and youth, focusing on its impact on their health and performance. The research combines experimental measurements and comparative analyses to evaluate key parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, CO₂ concentration, and ventilation rates. Measurements were conducted at the Elementary School in Slovakia, assessing the performance of natural ventilation in a large gym. The results revealed significant discrepancies between recommended and actual indoor conditions, particularly high CO₂ levels and insufficient air exchange rates during peak occupancy. A comparison with international practices highlighted advanced technologies such as real-time monitoring and energy-efficient retrofits implemented in Finland, China, and Spain, emphasizing their potential for application in Slovakia. The findings underscore the need for transitioning to mechanical ventilation systems, adopting real-time monitoring technologies, and aligning with international standards to improve the IEQ in Slovak sports facilities. These measures are critical for fostering healthier, safer, and more sustainable environments for young athletes.
