The intellectually demanding nature of a Ph.D. study and its many uncertainties give rise to numerous specific Ph.D. pitfalls. To overcome the cumulative impact of these pitfalls, you need to develop as a critical thinker, a creative thinker, a strategic thinker, a probabilistic thinker, a causal thinker, and an independent thinker by going through a routine developmental process, including “failures.” This leads to numerous irreducible chicken-and-egg problemsChicken-and-egg problems that effect generic Ph.D. pitfalls throughout your Ph.D. study. Accordingly, this chapter discusses the generic Ph.D. pitfalls of a Ph.D. so that you would be inspired to prepare yourself in advance.
