Several prominent particularly dense collections of stars are found in the Milky Way and are described as “star clouds.” Barnard was fascinated by the Great Star Cloud in Sagittarius (Plates 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30), the Small Star Cloud in Sagittarius (Plates 31 and 32), and the Scutum Star Cloud (Plates 36, 37, 38, and 39). He partially examined the Cygnus Star Cloud (Plates 43 and 44) and large dark regions in the Milky Way whose names have come into common use, the Northern Coal Sack (Plate 45), the Dark Horse Nebula (Plates 18, 19, 20, and 21), and the Funnel Cloud Nebula (Plates 48 and 49). Barnard was also fascinated by the Great Rift of the Milky Way. These star clouds and the Rift of the Milky Way are imaged in color and discussed in greater detail.

摘要
