How Does ChatGPT Do Politeness?

This paper discusses politeness strategies used in the ChatGPT-generated business emails and compares the results with a study on politeness strategies in human-written business emails in order to contribute to the process of improving ChatGPT. Qualitative analysis of the research material (20 ChatGPT-generated emails in Polish and 20 ChatGPT-generated emails in English) is employed to identify the examples of politeness strategies use. The results of the study reveal that in the ChatGPT-generated emails, regardless of the language, ChatGPT (i) rarely uses bald-on-record strategy and off-record strategies and (ii) relies on positive politeness strategies more often than on negative politeness strategies. While (i) is generally in line with the studies on the politeness strategies in business communication, (ii) is the opposite of what is usually claimed about business communication, which leads to the conclusion that pragmatic fluency of ChatGPT should be continuously improved.
