The Belonging-Resilience Link
摘要
A strong sense of school belonging is increasingly recognized as a foundational element in children and adolescent development, closely linked to academic, emotional, and social wellbeing. This chapter critically synthesizes research exploring how school belonging not only supports positive educational experiences but also plays a pivotal role in fostering resilience among students. Resilience, understood as a dynamic process shaped by both internal capacities and external supports, is essential for navigating adversity and maintaining mental health during adolescence. Drawing on ecological and developmental frameworks, this chapter examines the intersection between belonging and resilience, highlighting how supportive school environments can serve as protective contexts that enhance students’ capacity to cope with challenges. It also addresses the risks associated with a lack of belonging, including heightened vulnerability to mental health difficulties. Finally, the chapter offers practical strategies for educators, parents, and school communities to strengthen students’ sense of connection and inclusion, thereby promoting both resilience and holistic student development.
