A final source of tension between open science and socially responsive science has to do with the tolerance that each has for varied types of research methodology. Open science has more narrow and rigid preferences, at least when strong conclusions are being drawn. In contrast, socially responsive science focuses (again) more on outcomes than process and has far more openness (ironically) to different approaches to investigating research questions. This dichotomy has its own philosophical roots, including the degree to which the unique personal experiences of a researcher or research participant are weighed when judging claims. The dichotomy also likely leads to two different cultures of inquiry, with open science researchers being more critical and more skeptical of their colleagues on methodological grounds.
