This chapter introduces the application of computer vision technology in STEM education research and provides guidance for researchers interested in adopting this technology in their work. We first elaborate on the technological background of computer vision. Then, we review computer vision for STEM assessments and provide stepwise conceptual procedures for educational research. In addition, we introduce computer vision for STEM teaching and learning, as well as the use of vision language models (VLMs) to facilitate research. We demonstrate three use cases that focus on the utilization of VLM for STEM education research, in which researchers analyzed (1) the behaviors of STEM teachers and learners, (2) STEM laboratory scenarios, and (3) STEM learners’ drawings (Draw-a-Scientist). Implications for advancing computer vision in STEM education research and addressing technical challenges are discussed.

摘要
