A polymer molecule can take many different shapes (conformations) due to its degree of freedom for torsion about the σ bonds. The number of conformational states of a polymer molecule in solution, melt or rubber is almost infinite and any given molecule in the aforementioned states changes its geometry at a very high pace. In fact, if we were able to take two photographs of a polymer molecule at two different times separated by only a nanosecond, we would not be able to recognize the identity of the molecule.

摘要

A polymer molecule can take many different shapes (conformations) due to its degree of freedom for torsion about the σ bonds. The number of conformational states of a polymer molecule in solution, melt or rubber is almost infinite and any given molecule in the aforementioned states changes its geometry at a very high pace. In fact, if we were able to take two photographs of a polymer molecule at two different times separated by only a nanosecond, we would not be able to recognize the identity of the molecule.
