In the third chapter we examine the question whether The Antichrist constitutes the first volume of the planned four-volume magnum opus, or the whole magnum opus. Although Nietzsche never explicitly says so, many commentators have assumed that he by late November 1888 decided that it constituted the complete Hauptwerk. I argue that it is what Nietzsche thought and planned from 1884 until he finished the book that is of relevance and importance, and that he furthermore continued to refer to The Antichrist as “the first book of the Revaluation of All Values” as late as in mid-December 1888.
