Motivating Language Ability
摘要
This chapter will be devoted to an essential and integral understanding of motivating language theory and the motivating language scale, focusing on the range of leaders from low motivating language (low-ML) to high motivating language (high-ML). Leaders can span a range from (1) zero-ML or very low-ML use where their language is harmful and is not reflective of motivating language in any form, (2) low-ML use where their language is reflective of the ML constructs/dimensions and never rises to motivating language, (3) low- to mid-ML use where their language use is reflective of the ML constructs/dimensions and occasionally rises to motivating language, (4) mid-ML to high-ML use where their language use is reflective of the ML constructs/dimensions and rises to motivating language, (5) high-ML use where their language use is reflective of the ML constructs/dimensions and motivating language to such a degree that motivating language cascades and diffuses downward through layers of the organization, to (6) ultra-high-ML use where leader motivating language can, potentially, overpower employees and organizations. The range of leaders using motivating language happens due to a leader’s ML Ability which encompasses the correct application of the motivating language assumptions, the significant implementation of the motivating language constructs/dimensions, and the utilization of the elements of ML Ability (1) situational awareness, (2) active listening, and (3) intentionality in the application of feedback cues, environmental data, empathy/EQ and other items that help tailor and refine a leader’s mindful and appropriate use of leadership language in the form of motivating language. Finally, this chapter will offer researchers in the field of motivating language theory early research in the area of ML Ability and offer opportunities for the next steps in this emergent area of theory.
