Exploring the Role of Agriculture and Food Industry 4.0 in Climate Change Action (SDG 13)

The global food system faces the dual challenge of being a significant contributor to climate change, while at the same time being highly vulnerable to its impacts. This chapter explores the transformative potential of Agri-Food 4.0 technologies in addressing this critical juncture, focusing on their role in advancing climate action as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13). It examines how innovative applications of technologies such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and nanotechnology can revolutionise agricultural practices and food industry operations to build more resilient, efficient, and sustainable food systems. The chapter systematically analyses the contribution of Agri-Food 4.0 to each target of SDG 13, showing how these technologies can strengthen adaptive capacity, integrate climate action into policy, enhance education and awareness, mobilise climate finance, and facilitate capacity building in vulnerable countries. While recognising the transformative potential, the chapter also addresses key challenges such as the digital divide, affordability, and the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing. Ultimately, it argues that a holistic and collaborative approach to harnessing Agri-Food 4.0 is essential to achieving a climate-resilient, low-emissions food system, and securing a sustainable food future for all.
