This chapter examines the complex and often painful experience of tokenism as lived by BWELs, with particular attention to how the social phenomenon of homophily both fuels and masks structural exclusion. This chapter explores the roots of why educational systems render BWELs with hypervisibility while denying them the support, influence, and legitimacy afforded to their peers. The psychological toll of this dynamic, including the pressures of constant surveillance, the internal negotiation of impostor syndrome, and the weight of navigating performative inclusion, surfaces the tension of recognizing one’s token status—being invited in not to interrogate power but to validate its optics—while also feeling a moral and professional responsibility to disrupt.
