Girls, Information, and the Internet: The Impact on Sexual and Reproductive Health through a Human Rights Lens
摘要
This chapter explores the dual impact of the internet on the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of girls, highlighting its potential to provide critical information and support networks while also exposing them to misinformation and exploitation. Using a human rights-based approach, it examines the roles of state and non-state actors in regulating the digital space to safeguard girls’ SRH. The chapter analyzes how girls engage with online platforms, including social media, medical information websites, and generative AI, and assesses the unique risks associated with each. It further evaluates international guidelines, national regulations from five countries, and the policies of two major technology companies to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement. Lastly, it argues that a combination of legal enforcement, corporate accountability, and community-driven initiatives is essential to fostering a safe and empowering digital environment for girls.
