How Can We Help?: Exploring the Contributions Men Make Toward the Practice of FGM/C in Nigeria
摘要
Female genital mutilation/cutting, also known as FGM/C or female circumcision, is the total or partial removal of the external female genitalia for no medical reason. According to the World Health Organization, over 200 million women/girls are victims of FGM/C globally, with an estimated 3 million girls at risk for FGM/C and cross-border FGM/C every year. This paper explores the role men play in the ongoing discourse surrounding FGM/C. It investigates men’s understanding of FGM/C, their stance on the practice, why they believe in their stance, and their contributions to combating the continuation of FGM/C in their communities. Nigeria is a male-dominated country with the majority of decisions made by men, even decisions that concern women, yet in the case of FGM/C practice, men usually have little to no say on whether their daughters are circumcised. This paper gives insight into the perspectives and views of men in regards to FGM/C.
