Girls experience gender-based violence in unique ways. In some situations, girls are targeted expressly because of their sex and age, and thereby vulnerable to various forms of violence in the public and private spheres. Girls are also less empowered as concerns civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights than adult women, and thus less adept to navigate a world comprising gender-based violence. This chapter presents the author’s theoretical research and practical experiences with girl children, from legal clinics with girls living in street situations, to Youth Tribunals, the UNICEF Office of Research and International Criminal Court, and into academia, which led to a specific interest in the situation of girls and gender-based violence as well as child-based violence. It provides a raison d’être for a volume dedicated to girls, that is, female human beings below the age of eighteen years; their positionalities, and gender-based violence.
