The planet is undergoing a rapid and unprecedented transformation, with climate change emerging as one of the most critical global challenges. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned of a significant rise in global temperatures, leading to more frequent and intense extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, and storms. To mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure a sustainable future, it is essential to harness the potential of forests. Often referred to as the “lungs of the planet,” forests play a vital role in regulating the Earth’s climate by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby reducing greenhouse gas concentrations and contributing to climate change mitigation. In addition to their role in carbon sequestration, forests provide a wide range of ecosystem services, including biodiversity conservation, regulation of the water cycle, prevention of soil erosion, and the supply of timber, firewood, and non-timber forest products. Further, it explores the critical role of forests in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 1 (No Poverty). Forest-based carbon sequestration not only aids in climate mitigation but also underpins human well-being and sustainable development by providing essential ecosystem goods and services. The chapter also examines the current state of global climate change and the progress made toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite concerted global efforts, numerous challenges persist, including deforestation, population pressure, prolonged droughts, increasing forest fires, inadequate funding, and policy gaps. Furthermore, it highlights the crucial role of forests in mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable development. It seeks to inspire action and promote policies that prioritize forest conservation and sustainable forest management.

摘要
