Mitigating the Impacts of Climate Change Through Forestry

Forestry plays a pivotal role in mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change by acting as a natural carbon sink, regulating the hydrological cycle, preserving biodiversity, and enhancing both ecosystem and landscape resilience. This chapter examines the multifaceted role of forests in climate stabilization through carbon sequestration, temperature regulation, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of ecosystem resilience. It highlights key forestry-based approaches such as afforestation, reforestation, and agroforestry and assesses their effectiveness in contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Evidence indicates that sustainable forest management significantly enhances the long-term carbon storage potential of forests. The chapter also examines various national and international initiatives that utilize forestry-based interventions to achieve climate objectives. Despite their considerable potential, the implementation of such interventions is often hindered by land-use conflicts, limited financial resources, institutional challenges, and sociopolitical constraints. To address these barriers, we advocate for integrated, science-based, and landscape-level forestry approaches, supported by enabling policies and active community participation. Ultimately, forestry stands out as a cost-effective, scalable, and nature-based solution for advancing global climate action and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
