Innovative Learning in Biomedical Engineering: Integrative Projects for Practical Skill Development

With the objective of fostering advanced learning experiences and engaging students in real world engineering applications, the Biomedical Engineering program at the Universidad Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires has strategically integrated active learning methodologies into its curriculum. These include Project-Based Learning (PBL), Competency-Based Learning, and the Flipped Classroom model, aimed at developing technical proficiency, problem solving capabilities, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills. Within the framework of the course Introduction to Research and Development Practice, students are encouraged to undertake complex integrative projects that enhance their engineering competencies and align with industry driven challenges. During the first semester, they were tasked with concurrently developing four specialized projects, designed to provide innovative and technologically viable solutions to critical issues identified by professionals from IMTIB and the Ophthalmology Service at HIBA. Structured into collaborative engineering teams and guided by faculty mentors and industry experts, students engaged in a comprehensive design and development cycle, progressing from conceptual modeling to functional implementation, ensuring that the simulator underwent significant optimization and refinement. The execution of these high-impact integrative projects has not only deepened students’ technical acumen but has also provided them with immersive exposure to professional engineering environments, facilitating the strengthening of key competencies essential for their future careers in biomedical technology development and healthcare innovation.
