Meaningful Learning with Biomedical Engineering Students: Development of an ECG and CPR Simulator

To foster holistic and innovative approaches in Biomedical Engineering education at the Hospital Italiano University of Buenos Aires, we have developed a comprehensive educational plan that integrates multidisciplinary teamwork, collaborative design strategies, and a focus on addressing real medical needs. This article describes the educational experience during the year 2024 in the subjects “Introduction to Research and Development Practice 2” and “Quantitative Physiology 2”. Throughout the course, we promoted the development of integrative projects that strengthen the skills and competencies of the students. They were challenged to improve the design and manufacturing of an ECG and CPR simulator, originally developed by previous cohorts. Under the guidance of faculty members and professionals from the UHIBA Simulation Center, students worked in groups and navigated every stage of the project from conceptualization to final implementation fulfilling the objective of optimizing the simulator. This hands on experience provided a meaningful learning opportunity, allowing students to engage in a real world professional setting, reinforcing essential skills for their future careers. Additionally, it facilitated the integration of active learning methodologies, including Project-Based Learning, Competency-Based Learning, and the Flipped Classroom, further enriching their education. The implementation of these methodologies, combined with technological tools, significantly increased student motivation and self-confidence, while enabling continuous assessment and fostering the development of key competencies, such as: Digital competencies; Project management; Verbal and written communication; Problem resolution; Reading comprehension; Autonomy and self-regulation of learning; Teamwork; Critical thinking; etc.
