Assessment of Intraventricular Pressure Forces in Pediatric Patients with Congenital Heart Disease Using 4D Flow MRI

The research evaluates the clinical utility of four-dimensional flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (4D Flow CMR) for the anatomical and functional assessment of congenital heart disease (CHD) in pediatric patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 23 children (media age 11.8) diagnosed with various CHD types, focusing on 3 specific patients. Biphasic gadolinium-based contrast administration optimized both angiographic and flow-sensitive acquisitions. The technique facilitated comprehensive visualization of flow patterns, pressure gradients, wall shear stress, and streamline trajectories, yielding insights unobtainable with conventional imaging techniques. Post-processing facilitated high-resolution hemodynamic quantification, providing clinically actionable parameters. These findings underscore the potential of 4D Flow CMR as a noninvasive, integrative imaging modality for evaluating and monitoring pediatric patients with complex CHD.
