Digital Cultural Apps and Sustainability: Digistoryteller and Its Potential
摘要
The pressure for digital apps and tools nowadays urges companies as well as research centres to a constant development of new digital heritage and cultural material, in an effort to “preserve” heritage aspects as well as to attract funds from a pool of projects and funding opportunities. These creations, no matter how interesting or groundbreaking they are, rarely pass the threshold of “experimental”. Although open to the public, they do not attract investments and they do not develop into “products” that could be incorporated in people's daily lives. However, these apps and digital creations represent long hours of work for a large array of specialists, which, unfortunately, sometimes just goes down the drain after a couple of years. In the recent “Digital Storyteller for Refugee Attica” project (Digistoryteller) we explored ways of engaging various target groups as well as stakeholders, such as associations and local authorities, with our apps and tools, in order to maintain the digital environment and re-use it for purposes such as education, crowdsourcing of information, and development of future products based on phygitality. However, more strategic measures are still wanted to aggregate works produced and even to recycle some of the material in a way that can lead to their re-use and appreciation.
