Limitations of SFM Techniques for 3D Modelling of Archaeological Excavations Using UAV Images

This study explores the use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery analyzed through the structure from motion (SfM) technique for archaeological research. Using RealityCapture software, we generated 3D models from UAV images captured at the Roman Balneum in Rafina, Greece, aiming to identify SfM limitations. This research investigates the feasibility of using UAV images, even by non-specialists, for 3D mapping of archaeological excavations on a tight budget. We examine the potential for creating functional 3D models without costly equipment or specialized expertise, using minimal ground control points for georeferencing. By analyzing SfM limitations, including data quality, image coverage, environmental factors, and processing challenges, we provide insights into the practicality and reliability of UAV-based techniques in archaeology.
