3D Reconstruction of Thessaloniki’s Modern Public Baths

The documentation and conservation of historical structures is a critical undertaking in the field of cultural heritage preservation. This study leverages advanced 3D geometric documentation techniques, combining Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), and Aerial Photogrammetry from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to produce a detailed mixed reality (MR) 3D model and precise drawings of the Modern Public Baths in Thermi, Thessaloniki, Greece. Data acquisition included TLS mapping, SLAM trajectories, and aerial photogrammetry, along with ground control points for accurate geo-referencing. Produced point clouds were then processed and integrated using specialized software to create a unified model. Modern 3D reconstruction techniques are vital for accurately documenting heritage sites, offering high-resolution and precise data that capture architectural details. The resulting 3D model significantly enhances visualization and analysis capabilities through MR applications. These applications provide interactive and immersive experiences, greatly improving public engagement and education regarding cultural heritage. This study underscores the effectiveness of combining various 3D capturing techniques for comprehensive documentation and highlights the transformative potential of MR in preserving and presenting historical structures.
