Our study proposes a combination of 3D documentation methodologies to fully document the Virgin Mary Dormition Church in Kalampaka, Greece, a cultural and historical landmark. Our project offers a new benchmark in architectural preservation and digital archaeology by integrating UAVs and terrestrial laser scanning technology and it was realised as a diploma thesis in the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki discussing the importance of digitising monuments to protect our cultural heritage from natural and man-made hazards. It describes the methods and technologies used, focusing on terrestrial laser scanners (TLS), which have revolutionised architectural detail and heritage site documentation and interpretation. The thesis thoroughly examines the historical and architectural importance of the church and Kalampaka, while providing a comprehensive explanation of field measuring techniques. The text discusses the difficulties faced while using UAVs and terrestrial laser scanners in a delicate historical location. The research also examines how advanced software solutions transform raw data into interactive and usable 3D models. The outcome of our study produced precise 2D and 3D representations of monuments in the form of drawings and models. These models facilitate the architectural and historical documentation and analysis for the purpose of safeguarding public heritage. Our research strategy also addresses project issues and obstacles. These findings accurately demonstrate the challenges of digital archaeology and cultural protection, providing valuable direction for future research. Our paper concludes with key findings and suggestions based on extensive data analysis and practical experience. This indicates that 3D digitalization may preserve cultural heritage beyond tangible structures.
