Introducing new initiatives addressing child mortality, tuberculosis and venereal disease and continuing to successfully protect Britain from infectious disease throughout the Great War, the Medical Department under theNewsholme, Arthuras LGB Medical Officer;LGB Medical Officer" \r "idxintern319 leadership of Dr Arthur Newsholme seemed to have found its role as a strategic leader of public health. At the same time however the culmination of the debate about the role of government in healthcare, the political manoeuvring which accompanied the post-war drive for reconstruction of the British state and the impact of the influenza pandemic of 1918–19diseases, individualinfluenzapandemic (1918-19)pandemicsinfluenzainfluenzapandemic (1918-19) acted to condemn the LGB. Tainted by the Board’s overarchingly negative reputation, never properly engaged in the political conversation, and with his own efforts to instigate change hopelessly compromised by the impact of the Great War, Newsholme was to witness the post-war metamorphosis of his Department into the new Ministry of Health but was never to form a part of it.
