Despite the challenges of its first decade, the 1880s saw the Medical Department gradually broaden its range of activities and retrieve a degree of its lost independence. This chapter considers the widening reach of its reports and guidance, the growing reputation of its inspectors and its increasing influence on national and local government, all of which contributed to this renaissance and marked the Department out as a significant leader in British public health policy.
