This chapter discusses the current challenges faced by agricultural research in Venezuela, specifically in adapting to climate change. The effects of climate change in Venezuela include a water deficit for crops, driven by an expected decrease in precipitation in the eastern part of the country, and rising temperatures in the western and central regions. Agricultural adaptation to climate change involves implementing practices to mitigate its detrimental effects, with these measures emerging from agricultural research. This chapter is based on a review of research published on agricultural adaptation to climate change. Irrigation is a key adaptation strategy due to the anticipated precipitation deficit, and, as such, most of the research (10 out of 15 papers) focuses on irrigation for various crops. The chapter also highlights examples of climate-smart agricultural practices for tropical regions, which are adaptable to agricultural systems for climate change adaptation. Despite the growing body of research, the number of studies published remains limited, revealing significant gaps. Notably, no studies on agroforestry were found in the literature, despite its importance in an intertropical country. Additionally, there is a conspicuous lack of research on developing crop varieties resistant to water deficits and higher temperatures.
