Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a therapeutic modality used in a multitude of clinical conditions. This chapter highlights the fundamentals of physics and physiology of HBOT. The physical principles are mainly based on the gas laws, and it is essential for the understanding of the practical aspects of applying HBOT. The physiological effects on the human body are principally due to the high barometric pressure and hyperoxia induced by HBOT. It impacts the oxygen transport from the atmosphere to the tissue level and has effects on different organ systems in the body. An understanding of these aspects is essential for proper clinical application and management of the patient treated with HBOT.
