Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) consists in breathing 100% oxygen intermittently while inside a treatment chamber at a pressure higher than at sea level pressure. In certain circumstances, HBOT is the primary treatment modality, whereas in others, it is an adjunct to surgical or pharmacologic interventions. Over the last decades, HBOT has been used in numerous diseases, frequently without adequate scientific validation or formal recommendation. There are emergent indications to HBOT, such as CO poisoning, decompression illness, gas embolism, and anaerobic and mixed bacterial soft tissue infections. As HBOT can increase blood and tissue oxygenation, continuous study of possible applications is considered to be used in the future.
