Patients with diabetes are at risk of lower-limb amputation because of the high incidence of chronic wounds and diabetic foot ulcers. The lifetime incidence of foot ulcers in diabetic patients is around 25%. After successful healing, the recurrence rate is 65% within 3 years. The first step in managing diabetic foot ulcers is assessing, grading, and classifying the ulcer. Foot ulcers may be classified in terms of severity in order to facilitate a logical approach to treatment and aid in the prediction of outcome. Diabetic ulcers require complex multimodal treatment including glycemic control, local wound care, revascularization, treatment of infections, and off-loading. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been suggested as a valuable addition to conventional treatment for diabetic foot ulcers.
