The purpose of the present research is to study some cognitive foundations of hedging in doctor–patient interaction. The study is conducted within the framework of cognitive linguistics and critical discourse analysis on the materials obtained from authentic English TV series. Hedging is viewed as a product of speakers’ cognitive activity aimed at finding an effective pattern of speech behavior to ensure completion of the communicative task in a particular setting. Frame is a fundamental socio-cultural concept of cognitive science that allows to structure knowledge of reality by describing certain sets of stereotypical events/situations and their outcomes. It is characterized by the presence of a set of prototypical features that ensure its successful recognition. The deep frame reflects some basic features of prototypical events, whereas the surface level—the representative event—is dynamic, it is implemented in specific communicative situations and undergoes constant modification. This understanding of frame allows to model information processing as a sequence: deep frame activation—assessment of the setting –frame modification—selection of the representative model. In doctor-patient interaction linguistic hedging signals expression of empathy and support, which attenuates the potential adversity of the environment. The result of hedging is risk minimization, conflict resolution and positive perception of the environment.

摘要
