This chapter examines best practices as they relate to the evaluation of legally involved deaf and hard-of-hearing defendants. Suggested standards and qualifications for forensic psychologists working with deaf and hard-of-hearing defendants are outlined within. Topics discussed include interactions with law enforcement; the forensic evaluation of competency, insanity, risk, and sexual offending; and competency restoration. This chapter will provide a framework for forensic psychology practice with deaf and hard-of-hearing defendants for those students who wish to become forensic psychologists working with this population. For currently practicing forensic psychologists, it will familiarize them with the challenges faced by deaf and hearing defendants, and how they can become qualified to effectively work with them.
