The D.R.E.A.M. Program is one of the several day programs offered by the community-based, non-profit organization, New Directions for Children, Youth, Adults & Families in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This program works with and supports adults with intellectual disabilities who are also deaf, hard of hearing, or who use non-verbal forms of communication. According to data from the Canadian Survey on Disability 2017 to 2022, approximately 0.2% of the Canadian population has a developmental disability and is deaf, hard of hearing, or uses non-traditional methods of communication (Statistics Canada, Canadian survey on disability, 2017 to 2022, 2023). This chapter explores the dynamics of the program with three long-time staff of the program, including their comments on how non-deaf professionals can prepare to work effectively with these individuals.
