Torticollis is a postural head and neck deformity that can be acquired or congenital. It is characterized by lateral head flexion to the ipsilateral side with rotation to the contralateral side. Torticollis is a relatively common condition in pediatric practice. Torticollis may be a presenting sign of a variety of medical diagnoses, including neurological, ocular, skeletal, gastrointestinal, and inflammatory. Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is graded according to seven levels of severity. These are based on age at assessment, type of CMT, and the presence or absence of an SCM mass. Early diagnosis and intervention in infants with CMT is crucial to an excellent outcome. History and physical examination are essential in the evaluation of children with CMT. The goals of treatment for congenital muscular torticollis are to prevent the shortening of the SCM muscle, maintain the head in a symmetrical position, prevent or improve gross motor skills, prevent the development of craniofacial asymmetry, provide cervical range of motion, and prevent the development of future bone deformities.
