Rehabilitation of Neuromuscular Diseases with Facial Nerve Palsy and Facial Weakness
摘要
Peripheral facial paralysis is an entrapment neuropathy of the facial nerve with a lower motor lesion. The most common is idiopathic Bell’s palsy. Neuromuscular diseases are a broad spectrum of disorders of upper and lower motor neurons, their innervating muscles, and neuromuscular junctions. Both Bell’s palsy and neuromuscular disorders, such as facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy, and mitochondrial myopathy, lead to facial muscle weakness. In Bell’s palsy, corticosteroid treatment in the early period and exercise therapy for facial muscles are reported to be effective in the early period of recovery and the chronic period and to reduce sequelae in acute cases. Although there is limited evidence regarding treatments for facial weakness in neuromuscular diseases, exercise therapy is recommended.
